Narnia, the home of talking beasts

The story of Narnia is simple. The Narnia world is created by Aslan, the Lion, the king of kings. In Narnia, animals talk like humans do. There are good and evil, and fights.

The movie Narnia depicts one of the seven Narnia stories. Four kids, Peter, Susan, Edmond, and Lucy accidentally entered the Narnia world through a magic wardrobe. During that time, Narnia was ruled by an evil White Witch. The land had been frozen for more than a hundred years. The appearance of the four kids seemed to fulfill a prophecy that four humans would defeat the White Witch and save the world.

Lucy was the first one who entered the new world. She came across a faun called Mr. Tumnus. Mr. Tumnus asked Lucy to leave the land immediately because she was in grave danger. However, Lucy decided to enter the world again that night, and this time she was followed by Edmond. Unfortunately, Edmond met the White Witch herself and was enticed to bring his siblings back to her.

The next day, the four kids entered Narnia, probably due to the spell casting on Edmond. They found that Mr. Tumnus had captured by the White Witch. They felt scared and decided to leave. However, a robin led them to a beaver who later told them the whole story about Narnia. Meanwhile, Edmond slipped away and went to see the White Witch.

But the White Witch was furious to see Edmond alone. She wanted to kill all of them. After she learned from him that his siblings were in the beaver’s house, she ordered wolves to kill them. A war finally began.

Peter, Susan, and Lucy fled with the beavers to see Aslan. They were welcomed by Alsan and his army. With the help of a centaur general, they rescued Edmond from the White Witch.

Then the White Witch came and demanded the blood of Edmond because he was a traitor. All traitors belonged to her. The great Aslan decided to sacrifice himself to save Edmond.

In an evil ceremony that night, Aslan was humiliated and killed by the White Witch. Susan and Lucy witnessed the whole process and mourned for Aslan. Miraculously, just like Jesus resurrected from the death, Aslan also came back to life because a deep magic suggested that a real sacrifice could bring death to live.

The bloody fight finally came. Peter and Edmond were commanding their troops and they fought bravely. But the White Witch was winning the war. When Peter was defeated during a duel with the White Witch, Edmond rushed in and fiercely smashed the witch’s wand. This was proven to be critical because the White Witch lost her magic power. Meanwhile, Aslan woke up all the frozen soldiers and led them to the battlefield. With these soldiers, they eventually defeated the White Witch, and Aslan himself terminated the White Witch’s life.
Peter, Susan, Edmond, and Lucy were crowned as kings and queens of Narnia. They had ruled the land for many years before they accidentally found the lamppost and headed back to the real world. And there, they were still kids. So many years of glory were like a flash of memory.

Keen viewers may recognize the religious metaphor in this movie. Indeed, when CS Lewis first wrote this story, he had religion in his mind. The Aslan is the Jesus, and the encounters, dialogues, and fights mirror either biblical events or spiritual struggles. It is his intention to serve the novel as an allegory.

Frankly, the movie didn’t fanfare the religious views. It followed the novel quite strictly but did play down the religious part. For those who know the novel, they can find religious viewpoints in the movie, but for those who don’t know the novel, the movie is equally enjoyable.

I don’t like the novel because it was not well written and the religious stuff never appeals to me anyway. The point is, however, that the movie was made to carter religious people, and because the society is becoming religious, Disney believes that the movie will be welcomed by the society. Indeed, it is.
